It has been said by many that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women have natural sporting abilities.

As an Aboriginal journalist who has covered a wide range of Indigenous sports for many networks, I have seen first hand the remarkable skills, ability and pride that Indigenous athletes have. The barrier of age does not enter the thought process. This was demonstrated at the State and National Indigenous Golf Championships In 2008 at the North Course at Nudgee GC. A young India Matthews (pictured) played against opponents twice her age. Matthews was also the 2010 Leigh-Anne Goodwin Youth Award winner at the Indigenous Sports Queensland Awards dinner on the Gold Coast.

Ball Sports such as Rugby League (NRL) and Australian Rules Football (AFL) have been dominated by Indigenous players since the inception of these codes.

In Rugby League, players such as Greg Inglis, Johnathan Thurston and Ben Barba (pictured) have represented their clubs in finals football, their country and their people in the annual Indigenous All Stars format.
